The green iguana is a large strongly built lizard which is green in colour (the shade of green varies with age, sex and genetics). They have a very distinguishable dorsal crest, hatchlings lack this crest. The tails of Green Iguana's are banded with black. The adult male colouration my be dotted with other colours such as oranges or blues when in breeding season. Adults have a flap of skun on the chin called a dewlap below the lower jaw.
Much of Latin America.
Upto and sometimes beyond 6ft.
Upto 20yrs.
A room sized enclosure is best for this species, if that is not possible, don't even consider this species unless you can provide an adult with something atleast 6x6x3ft.
Forest with secure perches and climbing opportunities. This is a heavy bodied and somewhat boisterous lizard so all perches must be very secure.
Contrary to what some would say, the Green Iguana is scrictly herbivorous, for a full break down of possible foods, click here.
