General information
The White’s tree frog, Litoria caerulea, is a large dumpy looking native to Australia and New Guinea. Growing to some 4inches in length, this rather cute species of tree frog is commonly seen in the pet trade and makes an ideal first pet amphibian. This is a long lived tree frog, captive specimens generally live for about 14-16 years, however 20 years isn’t uncommon. White’s tree frogs also have the extraordinary ability to change their skin colour based upon mood, temperature, humidity etc. They regularly change from a dark brown-purple, through to lime green and sometimes even shades of green-blue.
The white’s tree frog is found in a number of different habitats, including dry forests, woodlands and grasslands where it is often seen near streams or swamps. It is also seen commonly in woodlands and hills which are far from water bodies – in short, this is a very adaptable species found in a range of different locations. With this in mind, wild populations are considered robust with no major threats.
Key fact: Frogs need moist skin because they adsorb oxygen through it – unfortunately for the frog this makes it a great place for bacteria and other pathogens to grow. To counteract this, the frogs release antibacterial and antiviral proteins which coat the skin helping protect it.
This care sheet aims to take an in depth look at the white’s tree frog, looking at housing, temperature and humidity requirements, food and water requirements plus other issues.
